SZA & Lizzo Almost Formed a Rock Band—And the Name Was Wild
Imagine a world where SZA and Lizzo were in a rock band together. Sounds epic, right? Well, it almost happened.
During a Twitch stream on Valentine’s Day (February 14), Lizzo shared that she and SZA once considered starting a band while working on their 2022 collab F2F from SZA’s SOS album. And the name they came up with? Pussy Lasers.
“We’ve just always been friends, and it’s a sacred space for me in this industry,” Lizzo said. “We had this little period of time where we were just linking up in the studio. One particular night… we were gonna start a rock band called Pussy Lasers with another incredible artist. I don’t know if she even wants to be mentioned, so I’m not going to mention her.”
While the band never came to life, F2F was originally meant for the project before ending up on SZA’s record-breaking album. Lizzo recalled watching SZA freestyle the entire track in the studio and being blown away.
“She ate that shit! At the end of it, I was like, ‘That’s the song.’”
Beyond making music together, SZA and Lizzo have a tight-knit friendship. Back in 2023, SZA publicly defended Lizzo against social media hate, calling out trolls for constantly tearing her down.
“I be wondering where all the virtue-signaling, well-spoken shit-talking internet warriors are when someone genuine needs defending,” she tweeted. “Where the fuck do y’all be at for Lizzo?”
When a fan argued that Lizzo does get support, SZA doubled down:
“NOT E-FUCKING-NUFF. For as much free love, encouragement, and positivity she embodies and shares on every app daily? The ratio don’t add up.”
She ended with a simple plea: “Just want everyone to practice kindness and shutting tf up more often. ‘Cause GADDAMN it’s ugly outside already. Why add to it?”
Whether they’re making music or standing up for each other, one thing is clear—SZA and Lizzo are the kind of besties we all need. And while Pussy Lasers never took off, at least we got F2F out of it.
