Too $hort-Narrated Film Freaky Tales Drops First Trailer, Featuring Pedro Pascal, Normani & More
The first trailer for Freaky Tales—a star-studded, action-packed film narrated by hip-hop legend Too $hort—has officially arrived.
Inspired by Too $hort’s 1987 track of the same name, the film takes viewers back to Oakland in the late ’80s, weaving together four wild, interconnected stories. According to the official logline, the movie is like a “multi-track mixtape,” featuring an NBA star, a corrupt cop, a female rap duo, teen punks, neo-Nazis, and a debt collector—all on a chaotic collision course.
The cast is stacked with big names, including The Mandalorian star Pedro Pascal, singer Normani, Insecure’s Jay Ellis, Black Panther’s Dominique Thorne, and the late Euphoria actor Angus Cloud. Even Hollywood legend Tom Hanks makes an appearance. Produced by MACRO, the film first premiered at Sundance in early 2024 and is set to hit theaters on April 4.
While the movie’s rollout is exciting for fans, Too $hort has been dealing with personal tragedy.
Late last month, the rapper’s older brother, Wayne Shaw, was shot and killed in Oakland. According to police reports, Shaw, 61, confronted a group of people trying to ram a vehicle into a cannabis dispensary. In the altercation, he was shot, and the suspects fled the scene. Shaw was rushed to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Too $hort has since shared his grief on Instagram, posting emotional videos of himself driving and wiping away tears. “Real tears,” he captioned one post, later adding, “Ain’t really replying to a lot of texts or answering calls right now. I can’t.”
Fans and fellow artists, including Mike Epps, DJ Premier, Royce Da 5’9", Lil Jon, Fat Joe, E-40, and MC Hammer, have all sent their condolences and support.
Oakland police are still investigating the case, including Shaw’s potential connection to the marijuana business at the property, as no cannabis permit was officially issued for the location. Authorities are asking anyone with information or footage to contact the Oakland Homicide Section at (510) 238-3821 or email cidvideos@oaklandca.gov.
